Fan-favorite Yancy Medeiros has made his first statement following his confirmed release from the UFC.
The Hawaiian scrapper lost four fights in a row in the lead-up to his release from the organization. While Medeiros struggled in the UFC, his strength of schedule was high, to say the least. MMA Fighting was the first to report news of the departure. The report indicates that the 32-year old featherweight Justin Jayne’s UFC tenure has come to an end also.
In 2018, Medeiros took on UFC legend Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone but lost in round one by TKO via punches. Ever since that loss, it seemed like Medeiros struggled to put things together at the highest level.
After losing to “Cowboy”, Medeiros faced at the time, an unbeaten Gregor Gillespie riding a 12-fight win streak leading into the match-up. Despite putting up a valiant effort in the first round, Gillespie managed to finish Medeiros with vicious ground and pound late into the second round. Following those finishes, he then dropped unanimous decision losses to Lando Vannata and Damir Hadžović respectively.
In response to being released by the organization he’s called home since 2013, the Hawaiian gave his first statement on Instagram to reassure fans he’s accepted the decision.
“FOREVER HUMBLED- because I know I could have less.
ALWAYS GRATEFUL-because I know I’ve had less…” Yancy Medeiros said on Instagram.
The 33-year old was always a must-see commodity and made for exciting stand-up brawls. As of now, it looks like Yancy Medeiros has accepted the UFC’s decision to part ways, and seems hopeful about what his future will bring. In the end, the Hawaiian leaves behind a record of 6-8 in the UFC with notable wins against Alex Oliveira and Erick Silva.
