In what was intended to be Bethe Correia’s retirement fight, the bout was scrapped due to health issues. Specifically, Correia is out of the fight because of an emergency appendectomy. The former title challenger confirmed her ailment on Instagram. As a result, news broke early Thursday morning that a new bout is on deck. Flyweight Wu Yanan and Joselyne Edwards will go to war on the Jan. 16 UFC card. With just over a week until the card is set to take place, the card continues to go through some growing pains.
Wu Yanan and Joselyne Edwards – A week’s Notice
Legacy Fighting Alliance standout, Edwards (9-2) will look to capitalize on a week’s notice. In fact, the 25-year old Panama-born athlete is coming off one of the biggest wins of her career. Particularly, “La Pantera” showed off her excellent striking. For instance, when she fought Pamela Gonzalez at UWC 22: Total War the young flyweight prospect finished Gonzalez in a mere 28-seconds. Prior to that success, Edwards struggled in LFA but demonstrated she’s meant for the big stage. Given the one-shot power she possesses, Yanan’s striking defense will need to be on point.
Conversely, Yanan is looking to bounce back after a setback from 2019. Even though her activity has been slim, Yanan’s well-roundedness always provides an apt challenge for any opponent. Despite losing to Mizuki Inoue by split decision, the Chinese-born fighter was never out of the fight. Before that loss, Yanan picked up a huge win over Lauren Mueller and finished her by armbar. One thing is certain, UFC Fight Island 7 got a nice infusion of flyweight talent come fight night.
