“Two championship rivalries will be settled at UFC 272 in March, Dana White told @bokamotoESPN.Contracts have not been signed, per sources, but both fights should be finalized soon.” ESPN shared on Wednesday.
The first Volkanovski/Holloway fight took place at UFC 245 back in Dec. 2019. While the bout was closely contested, Volkanovski got the nod from the judges in a unanimous decision victory. Roughly 7-months later, the pair of featherweights met for a second time, and once again “The Great” managed to secure victory despite the fight being razor-close.
Following the second contest between Holloway and Volkanovski, many argued that “Blessed” should have been the one to get his hand raised. After earning ‘Fight of the Night’ victories against Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez, most fans are in agreement that Holloway deserves a third crack at the Australian champion.
According to ESPN, all of the title fight participants have not signed any contracts, but the fights are expected to be finalized very soon.
Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan Unification Bout Is Set On Same Card As Alexander Volkanovski/Max Holloway
After a lingering neck injury kept Sterling from the Octagon, it appears the issue is resolved and the rematch with Petr Yan is set. Almost exactly one year later, the two bantamweights will meet in the octagon and settle the score. During their 2020 title bout, Petr Yan landed an illegal knee and was subsequently disqualified.
The illegal strike that halted the contest came at the end of round 4 at UFC 259. The results were marred with controversy as a number of fans believe that Yan was well on his way to securing a dominant victory against “The Funkmaster”.
With just under three months until UFC 272, the event promises to be one for the history books, as redemption is on the mind of both Yan and Holloway.
With the addition of Alexander Volkanovski/Max Holloway & Aljamain Sterling/Petr Yan, here is an updated lineup for the UFC 272 event on March 5:
- Alexander Volkanovski [C] vs. Max Holloway
- Ajamain Sterling [C] vs. Petr Yan [IC]
