LAS VEGAS – The UFC was back with more fights at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. This time with the first-ever UFC card headlined by an African American Female Fighter.

Waterson vs. Hill

In the main event, we saw Angela Hill take on Michelle Waterson in Hill’s 5th fight in 12 months. The fight exceeded expectations. Hill took the first 2 rounds with her crisper and more efficient striking. Waterson then took over and won the 3rd and 4th rounds with her grappling and ability to maintain top control. The 5th round was a toss-up that could’ve gone either way but ultimately leaned towards the “Karate Hottie”. Despite one egregious scorecard from judge Sal D’Amato in which he gave Waterson rounds 2-5, this was a very close split decision victory for Waterson with the other judges trading scores of 29-28 for Waterson and Hill respectively.

What’s Next for the Fighters?

For Waterson, I would love to see her fight the winner of Gadelha vs. Xiaonan. The winner of Waterson and Gadelha/Xiaonan would then fight a top 5 opponent next.

For Hill, I would love to see her fight Jandiroba next. I know it’s never ideal for fighters coming off of a loss to fight those coming off of wins, but after two razor-thin and super competitive split decision losses for Hill, I think this is a good fight for both women.

Azaitar vs. Worthy

In the co-main event, the undefeated Ottman Azaitar extended his streak with a very impressive early KO finish over the rising star Khama Worthy.

Modafferi vs. Lee

In Roxanne Modafferi’s return for her third fight of 2020, we saw a very competitive fight between her and Andrea Lee. Roxanne was able to get the unanimous decision continuing her trend of trading wins and losses.

Herman vs. Rodriguez

In the third fight of the main card, controversy ensued as Mike Rodriguez dominated Ed Herman for most of the fight only to lose via kimura in the third round. The controversy struck in the second round when Rodriguez landed a devastating knee to the body of Herman knocking him down and almost ending the fight via TKO. Instead, referee Chris Tognoni thought it was a strike to Herman’s (using his own words) “nuts” and stopped the fight giving Herman the opportunity to recover and rest for five minutes.

As a result of the controversy, Dana White gave both men win bonuses and heavily criticized referee Tognoni’s call.

Green vs. Patrick

In the second fight on the main card, the familiar face of fighting during quarantine Bobby Green took on 8-fight UFC veteran Alan Patrick in a very dominative performance. Green was able to utilize his wrestling to control Patrick all 3 rounds and earn himself a clear unanimous decision victory.

Quarantillo vs. Nelson

In the opener of the main card, we saw Ultimate Fighter alum Billy Quarantillo take out 16-fight veteran Kyle Nelson with a highlight reel KO. In the first two rounds, Quarantillo dominated in the striking leading to only 7 seconds into the third round when he landed a big overhand right for the walk-off KO.
