Trevor Wittman, the coach of Kamaru Usman, believes if Usman were to rematch Leon Edwards the fight would present new challenges for him.
Usman and Edwards fought back in December of 2015 where he beat Edwards by decision and since that fight, neither of them has lost. Usman is currently riding a 19-fight winning streak while the Brit is 9-0 and one No Contest since the loss to the current champ.
Although Usman has said he wants to fight new people, it’s likely he will face Edwards next time out. It’s an intriguing matchup and for Wittman, he believes the Brit does pose some new challenges for Usman. However, Wittman is confident they would be able to get the win once again.
“I think (we want) a new challenge,” Wittman told MMA Junkie on what he wants next for Usman. “Leon is a new challenge to me. That was so long ago, and I wasn’t his coach. I just want the best. As a coach, you want the best challenges. We want to go out there and make sure that we’re not hesitating and making different decisions and then seeing if we can change game plans up in fights. That’s a cool thing, too, fighting differently than you did the first time when you fought him. So that’s always a cool challenge for me as a coach. I’m open to anything. At this level, we want the best. That’s it.”
Trevor Wittman Says Leon Edwards Presents A New Challenge For Kamaru Usman
Kamaru Usman is coming off a decision victory over Colby Covington at UFC 268 to defend his welterweight title for the fifth time. Prior to that, he scored a KO win over Jorge Masvidal and TKO’d Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 to go 3-0 in 2021.
Leon Edwards, meanwhile, fought twice in 2021 and is coming off a five-round decision win over Nate Diaz back in June. In March, he fought Belal Muhammad to a No Contest due to an eye poke.
