Roman Dolidze believes a win over Marvin Vettori at UFC 286 will secure him a title shot.
Dolidze is currently on a four-fight winning streak and coming off the biggest win of his career as he scored a second-round TKO win over Jack Hermansson. It was a massive statement win and now the Georgian is set to face Vettori at UFC 286.
It’s an intriguing matchup given the two have trained with one another in the past. But, Dolidze doesn’t care much about that, instead, he says it’s just another fight and plans to call for a title shot should he get past Vettori on Saturday.
Roman Dolidze On A Title Shot
“I was always asking the UFC to give me better opponents, and I’m very thankful that they are listening to me,” Dolidze said at Wednesday’s UFC 286 media day. “I didn’t think they would give me Marvin. But now we have Marvin, another good opponent and we are ready. I will ask, of course, for a title shot (if I win). I think that makes sense because all these guys fought each other, and why not? New blood.”
Yet, Vettori plans to humble Dolidze as the Italian was disappointed the Georgian didn’t think twice about taking the fight on Saturday night.
“It is a bit personal with Roman, too, in a sense because we actually trained together before and stuff and we have some good friends in common,” Vettori said. “He didn’t think twice when accepting the fight.”
Roman Dolidze (12-1) is coming off a TKO win over Jack Hermansson and before that, scored a KO win over Phil Hawes. Also on the winning streak, Dolidze knocked out Kyle Daukaus and earned a decision win over Laureano Staropoli after losing a decision to Trevin Giles. Dolidze is currently 6-1 in the UFC with his other two wins over John Allan by decision and a TKO win over Khadis Ibragimov.
