Nicco Montano has been released from the UFC following her latest weight miss of over 7-pounds for the 135-pound limit.
At the UFC Vegas 33 weigh-ins, the inaugural flyweight champion Montano missed weight for her scheduled fight against China’s Wu Yanan. This marks Montano’s sixth bout in a row that did not materialize into a fight. The weight miss certainly was a shock to the MMA world as fans have now seen Montano miss weight at 125-pounds and 135-pounds respectively. MMA Fighting was the first to reveal the news that the former champion has been cut from the organization.
Former Champion Nicco Montano Released By UFC
Montano joined the UFC on the heels of winning season 26 of The Ultimate Fighter. The former champion beat the perennial contender Roxanne Modafferi in the finals of the reality TV show series. However, most of her time in the UFC has been spent on the sidelines. In total, the former flyweight champion will leave the promotion with nine canceled bouts, of which six of them were her fault.
After winning The Ultimate Fighter, Montano competed once under the UFC banner and took on Julianna Peña but lost a unanimous decision. Interestingly, Peña will likely fight for the 135-pound strap against the women’s GOAT Amanda Nunes, however, it was reported that Nunes was forced out due to a positive COVID-19 infection.
Montano was ultimately stripped of her flyweight title after being hospitalized on fight week for her first defense. The former champion was tasked with taking on on the current 125-pound great Valentina Shevchenko. While it appears the UFC tenure of Montano has come to an end, if she recharges her batteries on the regional scene, then perhaps MMA fans will see the 32-year old mount a comeback in the future.
