Since UFC 250, he’s been calling for the same name. Finally, he gets what he’s been asking for, news broke Tuesday that a welterweight showdown between Neil Magny and Michael Chiesa is on deck for the Jan.20 fight island event. The news was first reported by Brett Okamoto at ESPN. Earlier in the day, the organization announced the awaited return to fight island. Not only will the UFC be returning to fight island in January, but they will host three events within one week’s time. Ultimately culminating with Conor McGregor taking on Dustin Poirier in a vital matchup for lightweight supremacy.
Neil Magny and Michael Chiesa – Clash Heads
The pair of welterweights competing have a lot in common. For starters, they are both riding three-fight winning streaks. After multiple callouts from Magny (24-7), Chiesa (16-4) responded. However, as of late Magny has caused trouble for much of the division. In his last three bouts, against, Jingliang Li, Anthony Rocco Martin, and the former champion Robbie Lawler, Magny has come out on top with relative ease. Without a doubt, the pace Magny puts on his opponents is hard to keep up with.
Conversely, Chiesa’s strength is on the ground. He has also shown well-rounded striking but is a proven commodity when Brazilian Jui-Jitsu is on the table. For example, his standout performance against Carlos Condit demonstrated how lethal his submission skills are. Not only that, but the former lightweight also defeated Diego Sanchez and most notably, Rafael dos Anjos in a dominant decision wins. Overall the card is turning into a blockbuster event.
In addition to the Neil Magny and Michael Chiesa bout, here are all the scheduled bouts for the Jan. 20 event:
- Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev
- Viviane Araujo vs. Roxanne Modafferi
- Tyson Nam vs. Matt Schnell
- Francisco Figueredo vs. Jerome Rivera
