Sports legend and icon Mike Tyson is back for another boxing bout.
The former WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight champion is eying a September return. According to his coach Rafael Cordeiro, “Iron Mike” is ready for another boxing fight and is eager to get back into the ring. The news was first reported by sources at MMA Fighting.
While Tyson’s opponent has yet to be announced, Tyson’s coach Cordeiro insists that Tyson is already in the training room.
Cordeiro coaches many UFC fighters including the upcoming title challenger Marvin Vettori.
“We continue training,” Cordeiro said. “He’s an athlete and is always training, hitting pads here in the gym. I think we’re going to have something in September. I don’t know who because his company Legends Only League is working on it and negotiating a TV deal so they can announce a schedule, but we’re training. We’ll be fighting in September.”
In 2020, Tyson founded the Legends Only League last July to help retired fighters find fights after their career reached the twilight mark. The boxing legend promoted his first fight in 15 years under his own promotional apparatus. With a sterling record of 50 wins and only 6 losses, Tyson remains one of the most respected and accomplished boxers of our generation.
In Tyson’s last boxing match with Roy Jones Jr. last November, the 54-year old exceeded the expectations of many and took Jones Jr. to a draw. While the fight had a couple of lulls in the action, nonetheless it was a competitive and fun affair given their respective ages.
Without an opponent in mind, for now, fans and pundits can speculate as to who might be the best matchup for a 54-year old Tyson. Either way, we all know the last thing to go is a fighter’s power.
