Leon Edwards doesn’t think he will fight Jorge Masvidal.
After both Edwards and Masvidal won at UFC London in March of 2019, many thought that fight would happen next. Those thoughts only increased after “Gamebred” punched the Englishman backstage but for whatever reason, the fight never came to fruition.
Since that encounter, the two have still never fought and Edwards believes the fight will never happen because Gamebred will keep making excuses.
“(The UFC) just said he (Masvidal) doesn’t want to fight,” Edwards said to Submission Radio. “Basically I said, ‘gimme Jorge’ and they said, ‘basically he doesn’t want to fight you and that’s it.’ They said they put it to him and he turned it down, that’s it. You cannot force a man to fight, you know what I mean? He doesn’t want to fight — he talks all this BMF sh*t but he doesn’t want to fight. That’s just the bottom line of it.“
“I think he’ll find some excuse not to fight me,” Edwards said. “When I win the belt he’ll try call for me then, and try and fight me then, you know what I mean — even then I’ll probably give him a go at the belt. So we’ll see, we’ll see. I’ll keep doing my thing — I’m finna whip his ass, if that doesn’t get him in the cage with me, we’ll see.”
Leon Edwards is set to return in the main event of UFC Vegas 21 on March 13 against Khamzat Chimaev. If the Englishman wins, he could very well be in line for a title shot. He has not fought since he beat Rafael dos Anjos in July of 2019, however.
Jorge Masvidal, meanwhile, has not fought since he lost to Kamaru Usman on short notice at UFC 251. He does not have his next fight booked but many have hinted at it being against Colby Covington later this year.
