After Leon Edwards beat Nate Diaz at UFC 263, he said his next fight would be for the belt, but that isn’t the case.

Edwards will now fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 269 in a highly-anticipated grudge match. The two have had a rivalry since March of 2019 when Masvidal gave Edwards the three-piece and a soda. Since then, many thought they would end up fighting and now, it is set for December 11, and for Edwards, he says he has been promised a title shot with a win.

“They came with the right figures, so I thought I’ll make a little stop off before my title shot. Yes, that’s 100% part of the deal. I said it, even before the money came up, I said listen, ‘If I do this fight for you guys, I want to fight for the title next.’ They said yes so, I go out there, I put the performance of my life in and I fight for the title next,” Edwards said on The MMA Hour. I believe in my heart [that I’ll fight for the title next]. Where else do they go? There’s no way they can come with someone else. Like I said, I’m focused on the task at hand. I’ve got Masvidal in December, go out there, like I said, and take him out. That’s a fight I’ve wanted for a long time. I can not wait to go out there and shut him up.”

Leon Edwards is on a 10-fight unbeaten streak and coming off a dominant win over Diaz back in June. During his winning streak, he has beaten the likes of Vicente Luque, Rafael dos Anjos, and Donald Cerrone. His last loss was to Kamaru Usman so he has been campaigning for the rematch since then.

In order for Edwards to get the title shot, he will need to beat Masvidal at UFC 269, which he is confident he will be able to do.
