Gegard Mousasi is interested in sharing the cage with Yoel Romero.
Mousasi is set to defend his Bellator middleweight title in the main event of Bellator 264 on Friday night against John Salter. It’s an intriguing matchup but if Mousasi wins, he knows he’s running out of opponents so has some interest in facing Romero.
“(John Salter) is the No. 1 contender,” Mousasi told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “I don’t know who (Bellator) has in the middleweight division. He was the only guy I thought I was going to fight. There’re no big names yet in Bellator. Yoel Romero is a big name but he’s coming off (three) losses and usually, you fight once and then you fight for the belt. I don’t know.”
Although Mousasi has some interest in the fight, he knows Romero has to win a fight. The Cuban is on a three-fight losing streak but has only lost to the best in Israel Adesanya, Paulo Costa, and Robert Whittaker.
However, if Romero gets a win and wants to cut back down to middleweight, Mousasi says he wants that fight.
“Who wants to fight Yoel Romero?” Mousasi said. “He’s a monster. He’s in Bellator and if he makes middleweight, we’re going to fight. I’m a fighter. If you give me the contract, I’ll fight.”
If Romero doesn’t drop down to 185-pounds and Mousasi beats Salter on Friday, he’s unsure who he would fight next. He knows Austin Vanderford is there but he says he hasn’t been tested. Yet, for Mousasi, he will fight anyone Bellator puts in front of him.
“I saw his last fight a little bit,” Mousasi said. “He’s good. He’s definitely a tough opponent. He’s undefeated, but he’s not been tested yet against well-known fighters. I don’t know. If he’s the next guy, I’ll fight him.”
In order for Gegard Mousasi to even get the chance to fight Romero or Vanderford next, he will need to beat Salter on Friday night.
