Ahead of the monumental trilogy bout between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor, a non-UFC fight week still had heat as fireworks lit up the sky on the July 4 weekend.
As most fighters are salivating at the very thought of a fight taking place, we can all finally start making our preparations for one of the biggest fight weeks of the year. However, before the trilogy goes down, fighters took to social media to let loose and enjoy the summer holiday.
A week off from the UFC will perhaps get fans even more hungry to see the two lightweights compete in what is likely a number one contender’s bout.
After all, Charles Oliveira won the vacant lightweight championship back in May and most understand this to be the fight that determines the next bout for the sitting champion.
While the UFC president, Dana White admitted that Poirier had the option to either choose the trilogy with the Irishman or he could fight Oliveira right away for the belt, “The Diamond” chose the money fight, and probably for good reason–because if he wins, he’s all but guaranteed the title shot anyway. In fact, on the week of UFC 262, many fans were hailing Poirier as the legitimate uncrowned champion despite not picking the title fight.
UFC 264 is filled with action and big names. For example, fans will once again see “Suga” Sean O’Malley look for another highlight KO after his initial opponent withdrew due to a staph infection. The co-main event features two former title challengers in Gilbert Burns and Stephen Thompson in an attempt to cement themselves as a clear #1 contender at WW.
