It seems the fight between former teammates Diego Sanchez and Donald Cerrone will now have to wait.

Sanchez will not be competing on the May 8, ESPN card. In addition, the first to report the news was MMA reporter Carlos Contreras Legaspi. Despite Sanchez falling off the card, to no one’s surprise, Cerrone still intends to fight on the card. As of now, there are no firm plans for a short-notice replacement, but plenty of fighters have been coming to the company’s rescue after hearing of the fallout. Specifically, the “Trailblazer” Kevin Holland is eager to stay active and has even offered to compete at 170lbs.

With Diego Sanchez Out, Cowboy Needs Another Cowboy

Granted, Holland hasn’t been able to handle wrestling in his last few fights, it would still make for an interesting matchup. Not to mention, it’s an opportunity for “Cowboy” to prove he still has gas left in the tank.

As of now, Sanchez has yet to disclose what injury it was. With Cerrone hoping for a short-notice replacement, perhaps he can turn his momentum around this year after his 2020 season did not quite go as planned.

In particular, the UFC perennial contender lost by knockout to Conor McGregor at the beginning of the year. Prior to the mishap against “The Notorious”, Cerrone has been struggling in the UFC as he gets older. Specifically, the lightweight title challenger has amassed four losses in a row, but against very elite competition. For example, his other three losses were all to interim champions or better, like Tony Ferguson, Justin Gaethje, and Anthony Pettis. However, in his fight against Pettis, many believe that “Cowboy” actually won the second match.
