Sean Brady withdrew from his scheduled bout with Kevin Lee, so the “Motown Phenom” will meet Daniel Rodriguez on short notice instead.

Scheduled for August 28, there is palpable excitement for Lee’s return since he has been away from the game after enduring a heart-breaking loss to lightweight champion Charles Oliveira. Lee will return against Daniel Rodriguez–and it seems his switch to the 170-pound division continues. News of the pairing was first reported by Alex Behunin with Cageside Press.

Daniel Rodriguez and Kevin Lee Lock Horns

According to the initial report, Lee insisted on staying on the card after his first opponent fell out. The former title challenger got his wish and he has a tall task ahead of him. Lee is not the smallest welterweight by any stretch, but Rodriguez is definitely on the bigger side of the weight class. Standing at 6-foot-2, “D-Rod” knows how to effectively utilize his size and range.

In fact, Rodriguez had a coming-out party against a big name in Mike Perry back in April. Then, the 34-year old demonstrated his punching power when he shut the lights off of Preston Parsons in the first round of their recent July contest.

The story of this fight may come down to size, but the technique of Lee can certainly shift the narrative of this heated contest.

Under the tutelage of one of the sharpest coaches in the game, Faras Zahabi and Lee have established a constructive relationship, and the fruits of Lee’s labor were on full display when he brutalized Gregor Gillespie in 2019. Overall, if Lee can blend his wrestling pedigree and striking prowess, all that stands in his way is the pressure of the moment.

Conversely, should Rodriguez get the job done in a nasty way, the welterweight division will have no choice but to welcome their newest contender.
