The highly anticipated welterweight bout between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal is nearly finalized.

After the bombshell news drop, it was ESPN‘s Brett Okamoto who announced the Feb. 5 marquee match-up on Tuesday, Jan.11, 2022.

Jorge Masvidal will return to action after being viciously knocked out by the “Nigerian Nightmare”. Masvidal and Covington will serve as the main event at UFC 272. After dropping a unanimous decision defeat to Kamaru Usman in Nov., Covington is eager to get back on track in the 170-pound division.

Let's have some fun. Jorge Masvidal (@GamebredFighter) vs. Colby Covington (@ColbyCovMMA) will headline UFC 272 on March 5, per UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell. Five rounds, Las Vegas. Can not WAIT. https://t.co/URQfa6FEMm

“Let’s have some fun. Jorge Masvidal (@GamebredFighter) vs. Colby Covington (@ColbyCovMMA) will headline UFC 272 on March 5, per UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell. Five rounds, Las Vegas. Can not WAIT.” Jorge Masvidal shared.

In addition to the announcement, Okamoto clarified the date of the event as March 5 and will take place in Las Vegas in a packed T-Mobile Arena. If both contracts get signed in a reasonable amount of time, then the event will no doubt be a historic one.

It’s rare when the UFC engine decides to get behind one athlete. However, it appears for this special fight, the promotion is backing both fighters on a marquee collision course. With murmurs of the pair actually coaching an upcoming season of “The Ultimate Fighter”, they eventually opted out. Instead of being coaches, the two welterweights are fixing to settle long-standing beef stemming back from their days as roommates/friends and training partners.

Friends To Rivals, Jorge Masvidal vs. Colby Covington Brief Look

Scheduled to take place on the March 5 pay-per-view, the fight will undoubtedly serve as one of the most pivotal fights of both athletes’ respective careers. The welterweight non-title fight is a tantalizing one, mainly because we are unsure how both Covington and Jorge Masvidal will respond after failing on their second chance of trying to steal gold from Usman.

Prior to Covington facing Usman, the former American Top Team star faced long-time nemesis former UFC champion Tyron Woodley. The bout wasn’t the most exciting; Colby Covington won the fight in the fifth round via rib injury. After Woodley screamed in agony, the ref quickly put a halt to the contest.

With two welterweights holding near-endless gas tanks, whichever fighter can implement their game more effectively is likely to get their hand raised. While “Chaos” has an outstanding wrestling base, many wonder if his pressure will be enough to stop the slick striking of Masvidal. UFC 272 goes down March 5 in Las Vegas and this non-title main event 5-round fight promises to be explosive.
