Colby Covington believes he is the only welterweight who can beat Kamaru Usman, as he knows they are equally matched.
Covington and Usman have fought nearly 10 full rounds and many view it as either 5-5 or 6-4 Usman, showing how evenly matched they are. With that, Covington believes if he defeats Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 on March 5, he should get another crack at Usman despite being down 0-2 as both their fights have been entertaining, so “Chaos” says he should get another title fight with a win.
Colby Covington Believes No One Can Compete With Kamaru Usman Like Him
“It puts me right back in line to get another fight with Usman,” Covington recently said at the UFC 270 weigh-in show (via MMAJunkie). “The people saw in Madison Square Garden and New York City what happened in that fight. I easily won three rounds. I think I won four rounds. The only round he clearly won was the second. I won the first, the third, the fourth and the fifth, so the people saw that. They want that fight again.
“There’s no one that’s on his level that can compete with him like I can, so this fight needs to happen again,” Covington continued. There needs to be a trilogy because he hasn’t proved that he’s the better fighter. He hasn’t proved that he’s the best welterweight in the world, and there’s still unfinished business there. So I think after I finish Jorge Masvidal on March 5, it puts me right back in line to get my title shot.”
Although Colby Covington believes he deserves another title fight, it’s uncertain if he will get it. Leon Edwards appears to be next in line and after that, the winner of Vicente Luque vs. Belal Muhammad 2 could be next and then there is Khamzat Chimaev awaiting in the wings.
However, there is no question Covington is one of the best welterweights alive so it is likely he will at least earn one more title shot before his career is up.
