Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira will attempt his first title defense against the #1-ranked Dustin Poirier.
The lightweight pairing is being targeted for the UFC 269 pay-per-view event set to take place on December 11.
According to the initial report, sources at MMA Fighting were the first to confirm that the booking is indeed in the works. After finishing Conor McGregor two times in the span of about six months, Poirier will look to capture undisputed gold once and for all.
“The Diamond” fought for interim gold against Max Holloway back in 2019. After winning, and believing that it was only a piece of the world title, eventually, Poirier got his chance to unify the titles against the undefeated and now-retired Khabib Nurmagomedov. Like most of Nurmagmedov’s opponents, Poirier put up a good fight but got choked out before round three could end.
Oliveira cemented himself among the greatest lightweights after capturing the vacant title against Michael Chandler back at UFC 262. The Brazilian is currently on a 9-fight win streak. Many thought Poirier should have fought him for the vacant title, but instead, “The Diamond” doubled down on himself and believed the fight with Oliveira would still be there after handling unfinished business in the McGregor trilogy. All of which turned out to be true.
Each competitor has grown up inside of the UFC Octagon, so a win at UFC 269 will legitimize their claims to being called the greatest lightweight fighter on the planet. On Dec. 11, lightweight supremacy will be up for grabs between two of the most hard-working and deserving fighters on the UFC roster.
With the addition of Dustin Poirier taking on Charles Oliveira, here is the current lineup for UFC 269 scheduled for Dec. 11:
- Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Peña [C]
- Brandon Moreno vs. Alexandre Pantoja [C]
- Kai Kara-France vs. Cody Garbrandt
- Priscila Cachoeira vs. Gillian Robertson
- Maycee Barber vs. Montana De La Rosa
