Ras Hylton (6-4) stepped in on short notice to replace Steve Mowry who tested positive for Covid-19 and beat Rudy Schaffroth (6-2) in a heavyweight bout last Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Casino for Bellator 242.
The last week has been a whirlwind for the Maine based heavyweight striker. Hylton explained the whole experience as
“Strangely serene. I was in a better mind state I think that I’ve been in for anything ever leading up to this. All of the challenges that came along with it were just something to be dealt with in the moment and worked really well. I’ve got really great people around me who make this possible and got me down there”.
The fight was a difficult one but one that seemed like the judges should lean towards Hylton, which they did, as he won via Unanimous Decision. We asked Ras how confident he felt after the fight was finished and they were waiting for the judge’s decision.
“I didn’t know until they said my name that, that was the decision they were going to make. Obviously, I was hoping for it but I’ve never been to a decision, I’ve never wanted to go to a decision and it was a very anxious moment for me definitely”.
Hylton discussed his journey and dreams of ultimately fighting for the Bellator promotion.
”I didn’t know how I’d get to Bellator when this all started. I just knew it was going to happen and what had to happen and what I wanted was a foregone conclusion. This checked off a lot of boxes for me but even while I am celebrating and I love this and this is hugely exciting for me, I am still looking at the fact that I didn’t do everything I said I would, and that means not only do I get that moment of success and moment of accomplishment but I also have access to a whole roster of guys who are also a bunch of monsters. So it’s exciting but it’s also humbling to realize that there is. so much good competition that is available. So it’s not just this right now I need every fight now to be the best version of me”.
Hylton is now waiting on a potential Bellator contract. He said he heard some positive words from the Bellator brass and will try and relax this week before worrying about what the future holds.
