Eight months after beating Stockton’s own Nate Diaz at UFC 244, Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal has another chance to cement his BMF credentials.
Not only is he fighting the champ, but he is doing so on only 6 days’ notice. Usman is a powerhouse with notable wins over Covington, Leon Edwards, dos Anjos and one of the all-time great welterweights Tyron Woodley. He also defeated Demian Maia back in 2018, a mutual opponent who recorded a decision victory over Masvidal one year prior.
And even before Jorge gets to face Usman inside the octagon he has already won a fight to achieve a significant weight cut. “When they made the fight official I weighed 191 pounds,” Jorge told ESPN, meaning he managed to cut 20 pounds in just six days! He went on to explain that the weight cut was brutal, and we will see if this will affect his performance this Saturday night or his cardio.
Only a few weeks ago, Jessica Eye struggled to stand on the scale at the weigh-in. She ended up missing weight and losing the fight. Masvidal will need all of his strength to defend take-downs and when you incorporate travel and acclimatization time retaining power after cutting is no mean feat.
Someone who won’t be making the 8,000-mile trip is Masvidal’s American Top Team head coach Mike Brown who has tested positive for Covid-19. The former fighter is well respected within MMA and is widely considered to be one of the best around coaching the likes of GOAT Amanda Nunes. Brown has played an important role in Masvidal’s resurgence and not having him in his corner will be a big loss.
If Masvidal can overcome these challenges, the weight cut, and win the welterweight belt this weekend on Fight Island it would be the baddest thing any fighter has ever done in MMA history!
