Last Saturday night’s UFC card saw numerous stoppages, a fight of the year contender, and some big upsets. And yet, much of the post-fight attention was paid to the man who won a pretty average co-main event by decision.
Mike Perry entered his fight against Mickey Gall with a pretty big following and was already known for being one of the UFC’s wildest characters. However, his stock has since risen and not just because of what he did inside of the cage against Gall.
Perry looked surprisingly comfortable on the ground and continued to show off his slick boxing on his way to a unanimous decision. But, it was his post-fight interview that stole the show.
One of the big talking points entering the bout was Perry’s choice to have one person in his corner for the fight, his girlfriend Latory Gonzalez.
The gamble paid off against Gall, as Perry spent much of the post-fight press conference applauding Gonzalez for being “perfect”. Perry also went on a rant about the IRS in regards to his taxes, which is just the kind of unusual things we have come to expect from ‘Platinum’.
Unsurprisingly, Perry continued to ride his current wave of attention and called out veteran Nate Diaz on ‘Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show’.
Mike Perry made a comparison between Nate Diaz and Mickey Gall, claiming they’re both “skinny and weak” and feels a potential fight with Diaz will go “exactly the same way” as last Saturday’s co-main event.
Whether that’s true or not, it isn’t really important right now. What is important is that the UFC capitalizes on Perry’s craziness and gives him a big fight next.
Perry has never proved himself to be a potential title challenger, nor is his 7-6 record inside of the Octagon anything special, but, Mike Perry is undoubtedly fun. He’s the face tattoo having, Drake song quoting, coach firing, tax-man slating, ball of madness the UFC needs.
It doesn’t have to be Nate Diaz, but Perry’s next opponent should be another big name character. Perry might not be able to beat the division’s elite, but he most certainly deserves to fight them.
