LAS VEGAS – Another event is complete at the UFC Apex facility, and Curtis Blaydes did just as he said he would pre-fight. Well, for the most part.
Curtis Blaydes took Alexander Volkov down at will through the first three rounds completely dominating him in every aspect. Curtis Blaydes set the Heavyweight takedown record with 12 and showed some good hands in the early rounds.
Dana White had some interesting words for Curtis Blaydes stating he made himself “look stupid” for his trash talk and performance. Personally, I find his style very intriguing and I have no problem watching a grappling war for all 5-rounds.
Alexander Volkov had some success later on in the fight, particularly at the end of the 4th. Wrestling has a physically grueling effect on your body and is easily the most cardio driven style in MMA. Curtis Blaydes was completely gassed, and Volkov did as much damage as he could but it was too little too late.
Blaydes must wait until the outcome of Stipe vs. Cormier III to see who his championship opportunity will be against in 2021. Curtis Blaydes vs. Daniel Cormier or Stipe Miocic is a must-see, and we are in store for a fight at the highest level in the sport.
The co-main event was an absolute WAR. Josh Emmett defeated Shane Burgos via unanimous decision, but the fight was a whole lot closer than the scorecards suggest. Unfortunately, Josh Emmett tore his ACL (likely minimum 6-month recovery) in the first 15 seconds of the fight, but he continued to battle his way to victory.
Shane Burgos took the punishment that no other man could take. Josh Emmett landed 127 significant strikes, and many of them would have put anybody on the UFC roster out cold. The stocks of both fighters have risen, and I cant wait to see what’s in store in the future for these warriors.
