UFC 251 will bring us a Bantamweight bout between two veteran fighters Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and Pedro “The Young Punisher” Munhoz. The prelim fight will be the first fight for each of the opponents this year.
Edgar is coming off a 2 fight losing streak, the last of which was a brutal beating by the Korean Zombie resulting in a first-round finish. Munhoz is also coming off a loss, which was a unanimous decision favoring his opponent Aljamain Sterling 30-27 by all 3 judges. Both fighters look like they are ready to go and are eager to get back in the win column.
UFC 251 will take place on the long-awaited and highly mysterious Fight Island on July 11th. The promotion is no stranger to Yas Island having held 3 events there in the past. The new setup on the island is a direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic and will give the UFC even more ability to host events during this world-wide crisis.
The current fight odds favor Munhoz -210 and have Edgar at +165 about a month before the fight is set to take place. The gap will most likely fluctuate a bit but is likely to keep Munhoz the favorite of this bout.
Prediction: This bout is a coin flip for me. Both fighters are solid veterans of the octagon and are more than capable of winning the match-up. A slight edge may go towards Munhoz strictly based on past recent performance, but do not ever sleep on Edgar.
Frankie Edgar is one of my favorite fighters to ever step foot in the cage. A fellow Jersey boy and in my eyes a future UFC HOFer. He has absolutely nothing else to prove in the ring.
Get that W, leave your gloves in the ring, come back to Jersey, and enjoy retirement with the wife and kids.
